to the website of the research area "Visual Studies in the Social Sciences"! The research area was founded in 2009 as a trans-disciplinary initiative of anthropologists, political scientists, and sociologists at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. In 2013 the initiative became one of the main areas of research at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The common interest in the analysis of visual phenomena and their cultural, political, and social impact unites the different theoretical and methodological approaches represented by the scholars involved.

Regular meetings facilitate a thorough exchange of research findings and publications. The research area also includes the organization of lectures and workshops as well as co-operation in terms of teaching programs relating to the participating disciplines and fields of study.

Research interests of the group members focus on visual politics and visuals in political communication, art in local and global exchange processes, visual representations of social and cultural relations, and visual research methods.
